Ethiopian Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreement with Boeing for five of the manufacturer’s newest freighter model, the Boeing 777-8F.

In a statement Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said the airline is “[…] pleased to sign this MoU with our longstanding partner Boeing, which will make us join select group of launch customer airlines for the fleet.” and that “the new 777-8 Freighters will be instrumental in [our] long journey of growth agenda“. The five new aircraft are expected to complement Ethiopian’s current cargo fleet of three Boeing 737-800F and nine 777F airplanes, which the airline operates on flights throughout Africa and the world.

Boeing officially launched the Boeing 777-8F in January 2022, with a launch order from Qatar Airways for 34 aircraft. The aircraft is a direct competitor to the new Airbus A350F, which has so far collected purchase agreements from several airlines, with firm orders for eleven aircraft as of now.
