
South African human rights champion George Bizos has died at the age of 92, ‘peacefully at home of natural causes’ and surrounded by family, a statement by the Legal Resources Centre said. The Daily Maverick reports that Bizos helped draft South Africa’s 1994 Constitution, and was a lifelong friend of Nelson Mandela.

Bizos was part of the Rivonia trial team, defending Mandela, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu. He also appeared in numerous inquests into deaths in detention during apartheid, including those of Neil Aggett, Ahmed Timol and Steve Biko.
